I had the good fortune of stumbling across Acapela.tv while searching for something else, and what a gold mine it appears to be. The site offers lots of room for online creativity, whether you are a teacher or a student.
Below is a simple dictation exercise I created in just a few minutes using the “Good Old Times” feature. The announcer, his dress, and the old TV set could also serve easily as a point of departure for a discussion on life “then and now.”
In a discussion thread I was reading today, a member asked if anyone knew how to add subtitles to YouTube videos. There are probably slicker solutions out there, but one way is to use the “Annotate Video” feature of YouTube. In a nutshell, this is what you do:
- Log in to YouTube
- Click ‘Account’ at the top of any page
- Under ‘Manage My Videos’, click ‘Videos, Favorites, & Playlists’
- Find the video you’d like to add annotations to
- Click the ‘Annotate Video’ button and add comments along the time line
I am currently exploring the annotation feature to provide basic feedback to my students after videotaping their oral presentations. But I think it could be used for adding subtitles as well. Have a look at this short video tutorial provided by YouTube and see what you think.
