- Begin Unit 18 (p. 240) focusing on gerunds
- Do warm-up activity on p. 240:”Look at the picture — what are the people doing? Are they enjoying themselves?”
- Follow up with listening on p. 241
- Introduce and practice gerunds as subjects, p. 242-243; ref. “LOOK” box to differentiate between gerunds and verbs in present progressive form
- Introduce and practice using gerunds as objects of prepositions, p. 244-245; reinforce with “Time to Talk” on p. 243 and/or 245
- Distribute and go over supplementary sheets
- Ref. gerund spelling rules on p. 295 and gerund usage table on p. 299

- have to / have got to/ must for necessity
- not have to / must not for lack of necessity and prohibition
- had to for past necessity
- Distribute grammar explanation sheets for making affirmative and negative statements
- Work through related exercises on pp. 186 – 189
- At some point during this or next lesson, introduce role play activity (make copies) that lends itself to these structures

- “Time to Talk”: Put Ss into groups of 3 and do both of these activities on p. 177 and p. 179
- Finish p. 2 of American Graffiti activity focusing on modals from Unit 13 (OK)
- If time, begin Unit 14 on must, have to, have got to (not yet)
- Tie in role play (make copies) that lends itself to these structures (“You’ve got to come with us!) (not yet)

- Do exercises on pp. 176-177
- Study for real quiz on modals studied to date
